DiSC Profile Research: Two Diamentions of Human Behavior

Everything DiSC® measures an individual’s preferences to regularly exhibit certain types of behaviors. Everyone is a blend of all four DiSC styles, however usually one or two styles stand out. Each person has a unique behavioral profile comprised of sets of behaviors exhibited regularly and behaviors avoided. Individuals then prioritize comfortable behaviors and avoid uncomfortable behaviors. No one style better or worse than the other.

We believe our our differences can be extremely valuable. Likewise, we also believe our differences can become destructive.  Self-Awareness and the acceptance of differences leads to powerful relationships and healthier organizations results.  Although DiSC describes four styles, the model at its core is only two-dimensional. These dimensions reflect the fundamental aspects of our human nature and can be viewed as independent constructs. Simply differentiated by those who enjoy control vs. those who adapt and those who see the world as favorable opportunities vs unfavorable circumstances around every corner.  Extensive research validates 2 axis separating groups of people.

The vertical dimension includes people who identify with behaviors in the upper sections or lower sections of the diagram. Simply put, differentiating those who prefer control exhibiting fast-paced, outspoken behaviors vs. those who prefer adaption exhibiting cautious and reflective behaviors.

The horizontal dimension includes people who identify with behaviors on the left and right of the diagram. Simply put, differentiating those who fundamentally filter life through an unfavorable lens vs. those who see positive opportunities in all situations. Understanding to observe and identify behaviors within each dimension creates profound opportunities in personal, professional, and organizational development.

 Control vs. Conform

The vertical dimension is best described as level of activity, ranging from active to thoughtful. People with DiSC styles towards the upper half tend to be fast-paced and are often described as assertive, dynamic, and bold. Traditional explanations of the model suggest that these people perceive themselves as more powerful than the environment. Because of this perception, they tend to exert effort to change and control their circumstances.

People with styles that fall toward the lower half tend to be more moderate paced and often described as calm, methodical, and careful. Traditionally, these people are thought to perceive themselves as less powerful than the environment, and thus  they are more inclined to adapt to existing circumstances.

Favorable vs. Unfavorable

The horizontal dimension runs from questioning to accepting. People with DiSC styles that fall toward the left side are naturally more skeptical and are often described as logic-focused, objective, and challenging. A traditional explanation of these characteristics is that these people see the environment as antagonistic or unfavorable. They instinctively withhold trust and ideas until outside elements can be thoroughly vetted.

People with styles on the right side of the circle are naturally more receptive in nature and are often described as people-focused, empathizing, and agreeable. Traditionally, they are said to see the environment as being aligned with their interests. In essence, they are biased to see the people and ideas around them as favorable and are thus inclined to trust them.
